Choice and Competition
In the past, we’ve only had one electricity provider. SCP offers you a choice of providers and creates a competitive marketplace that will encourage innovation. In order to ensure true competition to the investor-owned utilities (such as PG&E) and ensure viability of Community Choice programs, Assembly Bill 117 mandates that when a Community Choice program like SCP is formed, it becomes the default electricity provider (operating as an “opt-out” program).
42% of the energy delivered through SCP’s default CleanStart service currently comes from renewable sources, and that’s growing quickly to 50% by 2020.
In the past, electric rates were set without any input from Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. SCP takes back control and gives us a voice.
SCP operates ProFIT to buy power from new local renewable energy systems.
