Dr. John Mihalik, a physician and climate activist, will present on climate change and the impact on public health. Climate change impacts include warmer temperatures, changes in precipitation, increases in the frequency or intensity of some extreme weather events, and rising sea levels. These impacts threaten our health by affecting the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the weather we experience.
One of the most prominent examples of these changes is our environment's increased susceptibility to spreading and promoting infectious diseases, including the emergence of novel virus outbreaks such as Ebola and COVID-19. We also see poor communities and countries being disproportionately affected by climate change, and therefore suffering the greatest health effects.
About the speaker: Dr. Mihalik has over 30 years’ experience practicing medicine, both here in the United States and abroad in developing areas of the world, and is part of Vice President Al Gore's Climate Reality Leadership Team.
