Lead Locally Pilot Home

Residential Participation Request

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Lead Locally pilot site. We are seeking residential pilot sites that meet the following criteria:

  • Active Sonoma Clean Power customers;
  • Occupants plan to stay in the home for the next 2 years;
  • Most technologies:
    • Occupied year-round by the owner or long-term tenant*
    • Interested and able to pay for installation costs (equipment is provided at no cost to the customer)

*If your home is soon to be vacant or will go through occupant changeover (likely a rental property), one of our technologies (aerosol envelope sealing) may be a good fit.

You can find an overview of technology-specific eligibility criteria below. Additional criteria may apply.

Sites that meet initial criteria will be contacted by the Lead Locally team to discuss additional eligibility requirements, the potential upgrades you may receive, and next steps. You will have an opportunity to discuss the project with the team before you decide to participate. To participate, you must be willing to allow energy usage monitoring and to complete quarterly surveys on your satisfaction with the upgrades for 12 to 18 months.

Funds are limited, and sites will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis after eligibility criteria are met.

Available Technologies

Near-term follow-up (Summer 2019)

  • Cooling & Ventilation: Night-time Ventilation
    • Eligible homes: Single-family homes with central heating and air ducts, but without central air conditioning
    • Quantity available: 10 homes
    • Don't want to install central air conditioning, but still want to beat the heat? With nighttime ventilation you can bring in cool air in the evening and often ride through the next day in comfort - without AC. This innovative nighttime ventilation system is like a whole-house fan, but it allows you to filter the air coming in (a real benefit for those fighting allergies), and it doesn’t bring noise and security problems that come with keeping your windows open all night.
    • Cost to customer:
      • Equipment cost: No cost to customer
      • Permit fees: No cost to customer
      • Installation cost: Customer pays costs
  • Water Heating: Grid-Integrated Heat Pump Water Heaters
    • Eligible homes: Single-family or multifamily homes that currently have an electric water heater, with one water heater per dwelling.
    • Quantity available: 10 homes
    • These high-efficiency water heaters help you save money by adjusting controls to operate in higher efficiency modes and/or pre-heat water at low cost times of day. They are also able to reduce power usage for a few hours if electricity costs spike on hot days. Because the water heater is well insulated and can stay hot for hours without power, the customer doesn’t notice anything has changed – except a lower utility bill. Plus, by reducing electric usage on peak days, these water heaters help reduce the need for rolling blackouts and new power plants to meet summer electricity demand.

Future follow-up (Fall/Winter 2019)

  • Air Draft Sealing: Aerosol Envelope Sealing
    • Eligible homes: Single-family or multifamily homes; best installed when a home is vacant, so it’s ideal for apartments or houses that are having occupant changeover.
    • Quantity available: 10 homes
    • Drafts in your walls or ceiling make your home less comfortable and more expensive to heat and air condition. While some air leaks can be readily sealed with caulking or weather-stripping, there are less obvious sources of air leaks that are hard to find and even harder to seal. An innovative, quick, and effective method has been developed that pressurizes the home and injects an aerosol-based sealant that seeks out and seals those hard-to-find cracks.
    • Cost to customer:
      • Equipment cost: No equipment to be installed
      • Installation cost: NO COST to customer for air sealing process
  • Induction Cooking: Induction Cooktops
    • Eligible homes: Single-family or multifamily homes that currently have an electric stovetop.
    • Quantity available: 5 homes
    • Unlike electric stoves of the past, modern induction cooktops provide unparalleled precision, control, and response that rivals gas stoves. It’s also safer, as you are no longer exposed to a red-hot stovetop surface or open flame. Besides being easy to physically clean (just a swipe of the surface), using an induction cooktop means cooking on cleaner electricity from SCP.
    • Cost to customer:
      • Equipment cost: No cost to customer
      • Installation cost: Customer pays costs
