How does a heat pump water heater work?

A heat pump water heater works by pulling heat from the air around it and moves that heat to the water in the tank, like how a refrigerator moves heat, just in the opposite direction. A fan draws in air, the system extracts its warmth, and that warmth heats the water through refrigerant lines. This cycle repeats until the water reaches the set temperature. What’s the difference between a hybrid and a heat pump water heater?

A hybrid water heater is a type of heat pump water heater that also has backup gas or electric heating. When you need a lot of hot water quickly, the backup kicks in to heat the water faster. Not all heat pump water heaters have this feature which is why “hybrid” models are labeled separately.

Why should I switch my water heater to a heat pump?

Heat pump water heaters are the most efficient way to heat water in your home. They use less energy and they don’t produce any harmful pollutants, a bonus for your home’s air quality.

Are heat pump water heaters reliable?

Yes, this technology has been around for over thirty years!

Heat pump models have a similar lifespan to standard electric water heaters, and with proper care and regular maintenance, the useful life of the water heater can be extended. Plus, they commonly come with 10-year warranties.

Will my household have enough hot water?

When switching to a heat pump water heater it’s recommended that you install a tank that is about 10 gallons larger than your current one. Since heat pump water heaters move heat instead of creating it, they can take a bit longer to heat the water than other water heater types, so a bigger tank helps you have enough hot water ready.

What is a thermostatic mixing valve and do I need one?

A thermostatic mixing valve is an optional add-on that mixes hot water from the tank with cold water. With a mixing valve you can set the water heaters’ temperature higher, which increases how much hot water you can store. You don’t need one, but it can be a useful upgrade.

Do I need a professional to install it for me?

You can do it yourself, but using a qualified installer is recommended. Professional installation helps to ensure the work passes local inspections and that the system runs safely and efficiently. You may also need to use a qualified installer to be eligible for incentive programs.

Where can the water heater be installed?

Heat pump water heaters need about 700 cubic feet of open space around it to circulate the air properly. Basements, garages and vented closets are the most common locations for installing these systems. Different makes and models will have their own guidelines which can be discussed with your installer.

What happens to my hot water during a power outage?

The hot water in the tank will remain available until it runs out. When power comes back on, the water heater automatically returns to its previous settings. If your home has a backup battery, the water heater can keep running in heat-pump-only mode, which uses less power.

How loud are heat pump water heaters?

The average noise level is between 45 to 55 decibels, which is roughly the same as a dishwasher. How loud the system is can vary depending on where it’s installed and the surrounding area. It’s recommended to discuss this with your contractor if noise is a concern.

Should I get a bigger tank when I upgrade?
