FAQs

See our list of FAQs below.

Once you sign up online and download the ev.energy app, we’ll ask you to connect to your vehicle or charger using the username and password on your eligible vehicle account. This uses the same process, called OAUTH2, as you might have used to log into a website using your Facebook or Gmail account.

If you complete at least one charge managed by ev.energy in a month, you will receive a $5 monthly participation reward. This reward is delivered as an on-bill credit, directly reducing your utility bill.

You can earn a bonus $5 per month by charging during at least three daytime-charge windows (from 10am-3pm) per month. This reward accumulates throughout the year and will be paid out at the end of the calendar year (or the end of the pilot). You will have a choice of payment methods, including Venmo or PayPal.

To participate all you need to do is plug-in your vehicle before or during the Daytime-Charge Window and set your ready-by time in the ev.energy app for after the Daytime-Charge Window is over. Your vehicle will be charged with especially low carbon energy and you’ll earn a reward point!

The GridSavvy Rewards sign up bonus and incentives for charging during Daytime-Charge Windows are delivered electronically through PayPal or Venmo, using the email address associated with your ev.energy app account. For new enrollees, sign-up bonuses are issued after completing the onboarding process, connecting their EV, and completing their first chargin in the program.

Monthly participation incentives are conveniently delivered as an on-bill credit, directly reducing your utility bill. Depending on your billing cycle, this could take up to three months. For more information, please email scp@ev.energy.

The Boost function in the ev.energy app allows you to charge your EV immediately, bypassing your scheduled charging times. Here’s how it works:

1. Set your ready time in the ev.energy app for each day of the week.

2. Plug in your car and the app will ensure it is fully charged by the set time.

3. Use the Boost function if you need your car charged sooner than the scheduled time. Simply open the app and tap the Boost button to start charging your car immediately at the maximum rate allowed by your charger.

We do not see or store your username and password. Once you enter your username and password, ev.energy instantly exchanges them with the vehicle or charger manufacturer for a secure token that allows ev.energy to be able to continue to optimize your charging throughout the program. This token is stored securely and encrypted in ev.energy’s cloud platform, hosted by Amazon Web Services.

SCP’s partner, ev.energy, will take a reading of your EV’s battery level to calculate how many kWh of charge is required to get your vehicle to the battery level you’ve specified inside the vehicle. ev.energy will also use the account to start charging at the optimal time, and stop the charging session once your car’s battery reaches the desired level before the “ready-by” time you specify in the ev.energy app.

SCP combines your charging data with that of all the other program participants and aggregates it into a set of metadata that is stored on ev.energy’s secure servers, which are hosted by Amazon Web Services.

You are free to stop participating in the program at any time, simply email scp@ev.energy requesting to withdraw from the program. We will delete the secure token that grants us access to the vehicle or charger you’ve registered in the app.

Once you unenroll from the program per the above instructions, we will no longer be able to optimize charging on your vehicle, and you will need to re-enter your login details into the app if you want to re-enroll in the program.

Any data from your charging sessions will be combined with other customers’ data. This anonymous aggregate data will be analyzed by SCP to assess the program’s benefits to the decarbonization and stability of the California power grid.

We will not control the charging on your vehicle when you are anywhere outside of a 500-foot radius of the home address you set in the ev.energy app. Charging at any other location (e.g. at superchargers, your place of work, etc.) will be tracked so you can see the energy you’ve used, but it will not be controlled. The app determines whether or not you are charging at home using location data from the GPS in the vehicle (or by connecting to your home charger).

Yes, you can add multiple EVs to your ev.energy account either through the main Dashboard or the Settings page. To add a vehicle, tap the Vehicle Switcher on the Dashboard or go to Vehicles in the Settings.

From there, choose "Add new vehicle," select your vehicle’s make, model, and trim, and link it with your vehicle's app. Confirm by tapping "Okay" on the success screen. There is a limit of one enrollment incentive per customer.

Though you can connect multiple EVs under a single OEM account (like two Teslas to one Tesla account), please note that ev.energy has not fully tested this functionality with different vehicle combinations and cannot guarantee its reliability.

To update your vehicle, please tap the “Account” tab and then “Vehicle Details” near the top of the screen. Once in “Vehicle/Car Details,” you’ll see the Name, Account (if it’s an integrated vehicle), Make, Model, and Trim of your current vehicle. At the bottom of this page, tap “Update car.”

There are three categories that you can update– each one will populate with the appropriate options as you go down the list. If, for example, you used to own a BMW i3 Range Extender (33 kWh) and now have a Tesla Model X 100D (100kWh), you’ll need to first change the make, then model, and finally trim. If you simply chose the wrong trim, you can skip the others and just go to “Trim.”

Tap “Save Changes” and you’re finished!

If you run into any issue while changing vehicles, you can always contact us for assistance at scp@ev.energy and we’d be happy to help.

The ev.energy Solar feature will automatically charge your EV during hours when your rooftop solar panels are generating electricity. ev.energy’s algorithm will obtain basic information on the size and output of your solar panels and, using your home address and local weather forecasts, will predict how much electricity your home solar will generate at any given time.

When your EV is plugged in and scheduled to smart-charge with “solar smart charging” enabled in the ev.energy app, ev.energy’s algorithm will direct your vehicle to charge during times of solar generation, so that the electrons from your solar panels can go straight into your EV battery (as long as your inverter is not in grid export mode).

If more electricity is needed to charge your EV to the battery level you’ve set before your specified ready-by time, ev.energy will top up your battery using grid electricity during off-peak hours.

Click on the “Smart” tab in the bottom navigation panel of the ev.energy app. Under the energy section, click on “Solar”. Then enter the size (in kW) of your home solar array and enable the “Solar smart charging” button, and you’re set!

To participate in GridSavvy Rewards, Chevy vehicles need an active OnStar Remote Access Subscription, and Toyota vehicles need an active Toyota Connected Services Remote Connect Subscription. These subscriptions allow the ev.energy app to manage smart charging. Check with OnStar or Toyota Connected Services for pricing.
