Sonoma Clean Power fights for you, plain and simple. We push back when PG&E tries to raise rates, and sometimes we even win. Those wins aren’t small change: to date, we’ve reduced customer bills by over $100 million.
We also go to bat in Sacramento, pushing for laws that cut energy costs and shield our communities from a hotter climate. A lot of this work happens behind the scenes, but make no mistake, protecting our customers always comes first.
Sonoma Clean Power doesn’t answer to shareholders. We answer to you, our customers.
Sonoma Clean Power exists to put community priorities ahead of corporate profits. We’re here to make energy cheaper, bills steadier, programs fairer, and the grid cleaner.
Our team fights for policies that deliver real savings and real progress on renewables. And unlike others, we don’t hide how our decisions get made. You can watch every Board of Directors and Community Advisory Committee meeting right here.
California has been at the forefront of renewable energy for decades, however we're still left with a problem. When the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing, we are still stuck with natural gas plants as a backup, which means we are still paying to keep these polluting plants online indefinitely.
Sonoma Clean Power, in partnership with Sonoma and Mendocino counties, is leading the GeoZone initiative to build 600 MW of next-generation geothermal energy in its service area. The goal is to secure affordable, reliable clean energy for our customers in the long-term, while guiding the development of local projects to respect and adhere to the community's values. If successful, the GeoZone will enable Sonoma Clean Power to provide 100% clean energy to its customers around-the-clock, bring well-paid jobs and tax revenues to its region, and inspire California to be a leader in geothermal investment and innovation.
Every electric customer, whether they get power from PG&E or Sonoma Clean Power, has to pay a fee called the Power Charge Indifference Adjustment (PCIA). This fee was created by the California Public Utilities Commission to make sure PG&E and other investor-owned utilities could recover the costs of power plants and contracts they committed to before Community Choice programs like Sonoma Clean Power existed.
Here’s the problem: of the 18 states (plus Washington, D.C.) that allow competition in electricity providers, California is the only one that never set an end date or a cap on this charge. That means Californians have been stuck paying a wildly unpredictable fee for more than a decade, with no clear end in sight. Additionally, these charges affect the total amount of savings SCP can provide its customers. This is irresponsible, and means PG&E can keep making money on their bad decisions. That’s why we’re taking action to protect our customers from fees that are intentionally confusing and impossible to understand.
Sonoma Clean Power is sponsoring two bills to support the Agency's GeoZone initiative. Both aim to encourage the development of renewable, next generation geothermal energy projects. If successful, these bills will help bring affordable renewable energy to Sonoma Clean Power customers 24/7, 365.
