Gas vs. Electric
Published on 10/13/2026
Whether you're driving the kids to school or packing up for a Thanksgiving road trip, gas prices are probably on your radar. Across our community, neighbors are asking the same thing: Is it actually cheaper to switch to an electric vehicle (EV), and is now the right time to make the jump? Let's break down how the costs really stack up.
The biggest financial and environmental savings come after you leave the lot. With regular gas hovering near $6 a gallon, home charging overnight is incredibly cost-effective. Charging on off-peak rates is like paying about $2.16 a gallon—or just $1.40 for CARE or FERA customers. This simple shift can save drivers more than $2,000 a year. Plus, EVs don't need oil changes and other regular maintenance, saving you even more.
"This summer created a perfect alignment for local drivers," says Brant Arthur, Program Manager at Sonoma Clean Power. "Between high gas prices, new rebates, and more pre-owned options available, switching to an EV has become more accessible. Beyond the savings, every driver who makes the shift helps reduce air pollution and brings cleaner air directly to our neighborhoods and school communities."
If you're thinking about taking the leap, there are some incentives to help bring the cost down even further:
- California's MyFirstEV Program: First-time buyers can receive up to $3,500 for eligible new models or $1,750 for certified pre-owned EVs under $25,000.
- Utility Rebates: Local PG&E customers can stack an additional $1,000 credit on used EVs (apply by November 11), or tap into PG&E's income-qualified $4,000 used-EV rebate. PG&E also offers up to 50% off eligible charging equipment, or up to $2,000 (and up to $5,000 with panel upgrades) for income-qualified charging installations.
A rebate isn't the only reason to buy a car, but it may help you decide. Reviewing your daily driving routine, charging options, and fuel savings is a great first step toward a smoother, cleaner, and cheaper commute.
